In the Turkey Woods
Published in Hardcover by The Lyons Press (November, 1998)
Author: Jerome B. Robinson
Average review score:

A Must Read for any Turkey Hunter
I liked this book on many different levels. The main reason was that it was easy to read and it flowed well. I do not read fast but still read it in five days. I loved the way he shares his experience through a story line. You can almost visualize the setup of the gobbler he is hunting. I feel as a novice turkey hunter that the things I picked up from this book will help me on the hunt. Even as I improve and learn I do not feel I will outgrow the entertainment value of this book. I will pick this book back up in a year and read it right before the season again without hesitation. Great Writer. Great Read.

A Great Place to Start
I'll be hunting turkey for the first time this spring and found this book full of useful ideas and strategies. Interesting and informative, it retained my interest like a good novel.

Informative and entertaining....
I enjoyed reading this book because it taught me some lessons for hunting the wild turkey and it was entertaining. Mr Robinson gave some pointers on hunting the bird as well as telling some entertaining stories. I like to learn this way. Rather than have someone tell me how to do things I like it when the lesson is demonstrated in an actual hunt. I would recommend this book for these reasons.

Irving Berlin: A Life in Song
Published in Hardcover by Music Sales Ltd (November, 1998)
Authors: Philip Furia and Graham Wood
Average review score:

Fascinatin' look at songwriter's life and craft...
An excellent short bio of the wondrously talented songwriter who had little musical education yet produced hundreds of great popular songs between 1908 and the end of the century (He died at 101.) As a non-musician, I didn't always understand the author's explanations of why a particular standard broke new lyrical or musical ground, but I found the information riveting anyway. Berlin, the immigrant, became a symbol of the American Dream and deservedly so. Anyone who cherishes American music should read this.

A True Master At His Craft
While this book doen't cover as much of Berlin's personal life as does Laurence Bergreen's biography entitled As Thousands Cheer, Furia's biography does cover in great detail the background involved in a number of Berlin's songs. "What'll I Do" was written just after the loss of his mother. However, Berlin said people read too much personal stuff whenever he writes a ballad. I like the fact that the author includes the lyrics of a number of Berlin's songs. Despite being a prolific song writer, Berlin often felt insecure about his ability to continue to write songs. Following his first big hit, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" he always felt he had to continue to follow up with another big hit. He was able to continue to adjust to the music tastes of the country until rock and roll came in the mid-fifties. He became a very private man in his later years and felt people no longer cared about his music. Despite these thoughts, his contributions to American music remain timeless and will remain with us long after the latest fad of music passes by. To think that so many great songs came from this one man simply boggles the mind.

a spiffy tunesmith
The creativity of Irving Berlin was amazing. This is a story of an interesting life, but also points out that, eventually, time erases foundations just like eroding soil or dripping water. Now, I would like to find a source to hear all of his songs as his number one concern was always quality. At times he would create a song in minutes, but it could also take years. As with most artists, he was continually looking for verification that his output was good. The appendix lists ALL of his tunes as well as other interesting data. A fine read.

The Killing Gift
Published in Paperback by New American Library (April, 1987)
Author: Bari Wood
Average review score:

Incredibly complex and thought provoking
When I picked this up, I thought it would just be a horror book. The story of Dr. Jennifer List Gilbert, a very ordinary and lonely woman whose extraordinary and unwanted "gift" repulses all the other people in her life. It begins with a sociopathic intruder to the Gilbert home dying an inexplicable and painful death during a home invasion robbery. The story of the police officer trying to get to the bottom of the mysterious death is interwoven with the strange and sad life story of Dr. Gilbert. Scary, suspenseful, tragic - I've read this book so many times I've worn out my copy and need a new one! Definitely recommend.

psychic killer .... quite suspenseful
This is a story about a woman who is a recluse. Attacked by an armed man, the main character kills him by wishing him dead. The homicide detective who investigates the crime becomes enthralled with this woman and her killing gift. Excellent suspense story, more suspense than horror. It's a Putnam Award Novel. definitely worth a look.

Excellent, captivating, I've read it several times.
A truly unusual book written 20 years ago. I've read it several times to relive the thoughts of the main characters and their stuggles with the amazing power of Jennifer.

Knock on Wood

Author: S.L. Lipson

Great, Magical book
I read this book in class and when my teacher told us we had to put our books away I wanted to keep reading. I felt like I wanted to read it all in one day. All the characters in the book seemed real. Althea is a fairy that Sara sees in the wall. Sometimes I look up at my ceiling and see different faces so I could believe that Sara could see Althea in her wall. I think I would be scared if one of my faces started to move. I think it was cool that Sara and Althea became friends. I like the "magic" glasses that came with the book. I could see the fairy and other magic pictures that I couldn't see without them. I can't wait to see Susan Lipson's next book because I want to see what will happen to Sara and Althea next.

Highly entertaining, reflective, thought provoking.
When lonely Sara discovers a wise and witty tree fairy trapped in a wood panel of her bedroom wall, moving out of her memory-filled home becomes complicated. Knock On Wood is wonderfully crafted novel for young readers ages 8 to 12 about relationships between family members, friends, mentors, and pupils. Knock On wood is a highly entertaining, reflective and thought provoking contemporary fantasy showcasing true life lessons in a unique and compelling fictional format.

a must reading for all pre teens
A wonderfully written book about a "wood fairy" viewed (with enclosed 3D glasses), that is magical and inspirational and relates to the growing up period in the young reader's life so marvelously.Compelling reading and a MUST for a sequel

La casa adormecida
Published in Paperback by Libros Viajeros (29 September, 1995)
Authors: F. Isabel Campoy, Audrey Wood, Don Wood, and Alma Flor Ada
Average review score:

Simple and Sweet
My son loves this book as a must read every morning when he wakes up and every night before he goes to bed. We love searching for the mouse and the flea and seeing the movement of the characters before they end up on the bed or off of it. The colors and the change from night to day are so smooth you almost dont notice it.

Good Book
Spanish is our native language and we speak Spanish at home so that our kids learn both Spanish and English. This book is a simple story with rather rich language, my daughter got 3 or 4 words she had never heard before. Besides, my daughter loves the story and the pictures; she likes to look for the mouse and the 'pulga' in all of the pages.

La Casa Adormecida
The language is simple and repeptitive, making this a great book to teach Spanish in Elementary and Middle grades. Illustrations are great. It's also a good book for native speakers practicing reading. I use it as a check-out book for English as a Second Language students, to motivate literacy acquisition.

Letters from Side Lake: A Chronicle of Life in the North Woods
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (June, 1988)
Author: Peter M. Leschak
Average review score:

It's great!
Peter Leschak's style of writing tales of life up north is both immediate and reflective. He starts out philosophically sounding a bit like a contemporary Calvin Rutstrum, but avoids being "preachy" by moving quickly into interesting but everyday stories of rural life. I am glad he has written other books: I plan to read them all!

Mr. Leschak is a wonderful writer
Peter is one of the best authors I've read. The reason I address him by his first name is because *know* him.. Lives quite close to me. I've read each of his books several times over...and as for the feeling of "being" in the north woods, I sent a copy of this book to a friend in Texas--and she said she felt as if she were here. I promise--once you read this books, you'll be hooked, and want to go one with each of them...

An enjoyable read
If you've ever spent a winter in the northwoods, and even if you haven't, you'll enjoy this book. He accurately chronicles living in a small town in northern Minnesota. His writing in excellent, and as you read you will feel that you are standing next to Peter as he sees the wolves and the northern lights

Lighting for Nude Photography
Published in Paperback by Rotovision (November, 2002)
Authors: Rod Ashford, Roger Hicks, and Jane Wood
Average review score:

Very nice illustrations
This book shows the way the lighting is set up on a 3d format, and also shows the end result. I was happy with this book and plan to use the lighting for more than just nudes.

Fantastic Book
This is an excellent buy. In addition to the gorgeous pictures by well-known and highly talented artists, the diagrams and equiptment information really allows you to crawl inside the artists' head. Check out Carson Zullinger's work on pp. 36 and 104. He captures glorious color and weightlessness in a way I haven't seen before. Very original and amazingly talented.

informative and beautiful
This book shows some of the best photographers and how they go about creating their images. A must read for professionals and amateurs. If you have ever thought of trying this genre, this is a must have publication.

Making the World
Published in School & Library Binding by Simon & Schuster (Juv) (August, 1998)
Authors: Douglas Wood, Yoshi, Hibiki Miyazaki, and Yoshi Miyazaki
Average review score:

Non-Theistic Spirituality
"Making the World" illustrates the profoundly spiritual connection between all creatures and their living earth, in a refreshingly non-theistic manner. It speaks poetically to children and adults about the interconnection of all things, reminding us of the effects of and our responsibility for the ripples we send into the world around us. With its beautiful words, images and illustrations, this book is deeply touching for all ages, regardless of spiritual beliefs.

Beautiful, Enspiring
Making The World is a beautifully written book. It begins by telling you a secret that you must promise to tell someone. "The world isn't finished yet, it isn't quite complete." The pictures beautifully portray many aspects of the natural world around us. It reads like a ballad, or a lullaby, rather than a story-book. Making The World is inspiring; it tells the reader that they too are helping to make the world. By "making and castle, humming a secrete song, laughing at the rain, dreaming of home, and saying I love you" you too are helping to make the world. The message in this book is so pure and simple. Yet, the moral of this book is sadly forgotten in the swift passed life we all live. We must all take time to enjoy the world around us, slow down and admire nature. We should feel thankful. We should keep dreaming, and enjoying the world around us. We must take time to say I love you, and be happy. This book has the potential for being a tool in helping children to find a cause to help "make the world". This book has helped me through some pretty tough times. It has helped me to a take a breath, relax and think. I too am helping to make the world. My attitude and ways I touch people each day, help to make and shape the worlds of the people around me. When I think in this way, anything is possible.

Gorgeous book.
This book is utterly beautiful, so stirring. Each time we read it, it gets us pondering aloud together about how the world is, things we wonder, things we've noticed, how we are seeing life, and he tells me about how he would like his life to be. It is a stirring book, and perfect for going on then to dream about life's magic.

The Marketing Plan: A Handbook
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (02 May, 2002)
Author: Marian Burk Wood
Average review score:

Straightforward and practical
Having no formal training in marketing, I was impressed by the straightforward way this book explains how to write a marketing plan. At times I'm tempted to go straight to the tactics-where should I advertise? What should I charge?-but this book prompted me to go back to the beginning, starting with my small business's situation, goals, and competition. This was the first time I've drafted a highly detailed, full-year marketing plan. I used the software packaged with the book as a starting point, but wound up creating a different format and order of topics for my finished plan.

Highly recommended
Although I've been in marketing for more than a decade, I got a lot out of this book. The checklists provided invaluable pointers about what to cover when writing a marketing plan. I also bookmarked many of the web sites listed in the appendix so I can use them for further research. The author peppers every chapter with lively, in-depth examples that sparked a couple of new ideas for my business. Even the sample marketing plan in the back of the book was a helpful guide for fleshing out my own thoughts. Highly recommended!

great reference for writing a marketing plan
this book is a great supplement to any intro marketing textbook or by itself -- taking you step by step through the process of writing a marketing plan. a practical book for anyone interested in learning/understanding how basic marketing concepts come together, or any new product managers out there not wanting to look like homer simpson ("DOH") when asked to write your first marketing plan. it'll help you frame your thoughts, create an outline of things to cover, and remind you of things you might otherwise forget to include. also serves as a great "cliff notes" type reference of the hefty marketing textbooks you devoured while in b-school.
